Powerful, understated, and audio appealing, singer/actress Selena Gomez broke ground when she released her 2019 comeback song “Lose You To Love Me.”
The black and white music video featured various “versions” of Gomez reflecting on her past while being filmed on an iPhone. The video followed Gomez’s rocky past with ex Justin Bieber now married to Hailey Bieber.
The message behind the song seemed simple enough, a breakaway from a relationship that seemed everlasting. However, to the singer, and ultimately, to fans, the song had a deeper impact than the initial viewing.
Gomez has been a longtime advocate for mental health, which was a factor in her taking a break from the music industry. She was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2020 and had been open about her struggles with her anxiety and depression before then.
In one sense, the song focuses on relationship breakthrough, but in another, the song is a ballad for mental health. It’s difficult to explain how the singer can’t be relatable to people everywhere.
“Lose You To Love Me” to this day remains Gomez’s best song both in sound and advice takeaway. Within its 24 hour release, the music video received over 18.1 million views, following close behind her next track, “Look At Her Now,” with 18.2 million views.
